I got this new toy from Amazon. It is a 3D-printed model of a mechanical watch movement. It is amazing. This 3D-printed thing actually works like a real machine! Once I wind and release it, it starts making a regular tick-tock, tick-tock sound. This is probably the central part of a mechanical watch.
It has 3 components (the mainspring and gear train, the escapement, and the oscillator). What I like most is that I can see how everything works with my own eyes. I can even see where the tick-tock sound comes from.
The escapement (the yellow part that looks like a ship’s wheel) is the one that makes the sound, and it is the most interesting part to me. It sits between the mainspring gear and the oscillator. I think it controls things here.
I can see what it does, but I don’t fully understand how it does yet. I want to figure this out.
